Ancient Astronaut Theory: Fact or Conspiracy?

I'll confess; one of my obsessions in the past was reading about the Ancient Astronaut Theory. It was at least fun to see history from a different perspective.

As time has passed, I find myself much less convinced by the idea. Essentially, I learned that a lot of the underlying facts which support the theory are just flat out wrong.

For example, the translations of Ancient Sumarian relied upon by Ancient Astronaut Theory are dead wrong. There are examples of the proponents exaggerating dates, weights, and difficulty in cutting certain stones.

Is there anybody here who adheres to the Ancient Astronaut Theory? What evidence do you find to be the most compelling?

Not sure if I adhere to the Ancient Astronaut Theory, however, there are some mysterious individuals in history that would be interesting to know a lot more about :

Quetzalcoatl , Thoth, The Birdman of Monks Mound, and possibly the Anunnaki.

Similar descriptions, similar attributes, and each having a crucial role with the advancement of their respective civilizations.

Who were they and why are these "birdmen" mentioned by civilizations thousands of miles apart?

All of humanity came from a single area in the world; namely central Africa. Therefore, I find it much more likely that rather than these ideas coming about independently thousands of miles apart, the ideas travelled with humans to different parts of the globe. But, obviously, I have no hard evidence for this idea.

My theory is that the ancient astronauts are people from pre-ancient civilizations. So - they aren't necessarily beings from another planet, although Mars may have been Earth-like at one time. I believe these beings attributed as ancient astronauts had advanced technology, based on different foundations than our current advancements. Our advanced technology seems to be based on a "artificial" foundation. Whereas, I believe that the pre-ancient civilizations based their technology more on natural foundations.

And despite their advancements, suffered through some sort of planet wide disaster, which reduced their populations greatly. I believe that remnants of those civilizations still exist, however, they limit their interactions with the current dominant civilizations.

I recommend a viewing of the Ancient Aliens Debunked video as a matter of course when interacting with the Ancient Astronaut Theory (I would say it gives an introduction to the Theory's arguments, follows with counter-arguments and as a side note also presents many interesting pieces of historical information from a general knowledge standpoint). It sounds like you yourself are already familiar with the salient points about much "evidence" of ancient astronauts being simply incorrect in terms of what is known by mainstream scientists, archaeologists and historians.

I find myself in agreement with Chris White, who made the AADebunked documentary when he says that something strange could have occurred in the distant past, but I don't necessarily believe that alien visitation is the only explanation - oddities preserved in history, for example the "universal Nephilim myth" that crops up in various forms in many different mythologies, could come down to any number of things, from the mundane psychological phenomena, metaphor, or misinterpretation of events to the extreme possibility of divine or alien intervention.

What a fantastic first post; welcome to the site Evasion!

I used to be all about the ancient astronaut theory (and still am from the entertainment/wishful thinking perspective). The video you mentioned was definitely part of helping me pull my head out of my ass and focus on facts vs. speculation.

There's still a lot that's not understood, but approaching it from a position of factual knowledge helps weed out the crap much easier.

Thank you for the welcome!

It's generally not a good idea to be too extreme in accepting or totally discounting anything. But more to the point - given the size of the universe, it is entirely possible and in fact quite reasonably probable that we are not alone. However, again given the sheer size of the universe and the kind of technology it would take to traverse that distance... the idea that there are civilizations of sentient beings out there that have not only mastered travel on a galactic or universal scale begins to look more like fantasy.

I also find it interesting how Earth-centric Ancient Astronaut theorists seem to be - for example, the notion that aliens came to Earth to mine minerals - yes, a race of intelligent beings came to Earth from far away enough that we have yet to detect their presence, specifically to mine our planet when they probably passed several, if not an almost infinite number of other planets on the way here?

I may be getting off track here but something else has occurred to me recently - isn't it odd how our concept of alien life seems to be that they would be basically human - maybe with a few extra stripes or an elongated skeleton, but generally speaking they have legs, arms, a head...

My theory is that the ancient astronauts are people from pre-ancient civilizations.
This is certainly one explanation. True "alien" life from outside our solar system may be even more fantastic than we have yet imagined! Or, it could resemble something we might recognise as plant-like. Given some interesting facts on the nature of mushroom biology and psychoactive effects of certain species, I for one would be excited to meet some sapient shroom people.

Verdict: alien life, maybe even sentient alien life - probable. Involvement in human history or visits to Earth - doubtful.

I am not to sure what exactly are the ancient Astronauts. I am thinking this is the theory that people from the future traveled back in ancient time to give inventions or knowledge so that current day civilization would have been formulated from the very ancient information. If I am correct in my understanding, then I would say that I do not believe it possible. What I think is that some man and woman are born with difference and in those differences we can have individuals who develop methods to improve our way of living. These individuals could be seen as time travelers because they have ideas that are beyond what others may think up.
